NEUTRALIZATION

In the neutralization step, oil is treated with caustic soda, and free fatty acids are converted into insoluble soaps which can be easily separated by centrifugation. The main purpose is to remove free fatty acids. But at the same time, waste phospholipids are removed. Caustic refining significantly improves oil color by reacting oil components with partial solubilization. For crude oils with high acidity and pigment content, alkaline oil must be refined.

Free oil acid is a factor that determines the amount, density and excess of the caustic soda for its minimum fat loss. Neutralization treatment includes blending (caustic and oil), centrifugal separation (soapstock), holding (washing water), drying and bleaching.

NEUTRALIZATION PROCESS

  • The oil is gently mixed.
  • It is heated to 80 ° C.
  • It is allowed to stand for about 30 minutes.
  • The water phase is eliminated by centrifugation.
  • The oil is washed with water to remove the remaining water.
